Style Advice :: How to wear a skirt the right way!

I feel that with the title of this article in conjunction with the pictures, I really don't have to comment on much.  Those two things pretty much speak for themselves and you can see the problems you should be correcting when styling a skirt.  But.. I'm going to put my 2cents in anyways, lol!

It's that time of the year, we are dusting off the spring skirts and shaving our legs :)  With every style consultation I am showing clients how to style and create multiple looks with this seasonal staple.  But before I get very far I am correcting the same style mistakes on almost every singe gal.  There are a few essential things you need to know when you are wearing a skirt this spring.

If there is too much fabric there is not enough you!  It's important that we see shape and/or structure somewhere.  If you can look in the mirror and draw a rectangle over your image, there is a problem.  Shave off pounds my tucking in and belting your skirts.  This will draw the eye in and minimize fabric overload.

Find balance.  Maxi skirts have transcended from being a trend to being a staple in most women's wardrobes.  Even if you have a petite frame you can pull off this piece, you just need to find the balance.  If you are wearing a full skirt on the bottom, you have to wear a fitted top.  Full on top and full on bottom comes out to frump on top of frump.  And of course, tuck in in and belt.  Look how long the leg line becomes, giving height to this 5'4" frame!

Layer right.  Believe it or not skirts need structure.  It's back to that balance word again :)  When skirts are full and flowy they need to be balanced out with some structure and stability.  Try throwing on a denim jacket or chambray top.  I am also a big fan of waxed utility jackets or vest!  Oh, don't forget to tuck in and belt.

Pair the right top.  I see it often where clients try to go for the monochromatic look by pairing a dark skirt with a dark top.  I get it, and there might be some instances where that would work.  But when you do that, we start lose shape.  There needs to be definition to where your torso ends and your legs begin.  To keep it casual I recommend vintage vneck tees and tanks in white to wear with your skirts this spring.  Make sure you tuck in and belt, giving you a polished and finished look!

Tuck in that darn top!  I'm not even going to be cute with this one.  Look at how much more of the skirts pattern and style is revealed when the top is properly tucked.  There is also gained height, minimized waist, and added style!

Wear it where you're supposed to.  Over and over I see women tugging and pulling down their skirts to their hips.  This does a couple of things.  It makes your legs look shorter, your waist longer, and style frumpier.  Skirts are designed and cut to fit at your natural waist, so that the fit and flare of the garment compliment your shape not take away from it.  Hike those skirts up to the waist and you will get a much better fit and more flattering flare!  Tuck in and belt. [I had to!]

Well gang, I did it!  I got my bra make-over from Amy Holland 'The Bra Lady' with Essential Bodywear.  It took all but 3 minutes into my time with her to say to my self, and out loud, "Why have I not done this before!"  1 hour with Amy has changed the rest of my styled life!  And I mean it when I say 'styled life'.

The pictures speak a thousands words!  I was shock at how much slimmer my waist looked and how much more shape my figure got when I was put into the Abbie Bra from Essential Bodywear It felt like butta' when I slipped into this undergarment and I didn't want to go back to what I was wearing! The bras from EBW have a comfort I've never felt before in a bra, even with under wire!  The best part of being made over and fitted by Amy was that she not only made me feel comfortable, but she educated me on the whys and whats when it comes to undergarments.

Did you know you should be fit and sized yearly, at a minimum.  No lie, when I arrived I told Amy I didn't even know what size I was any more.  Also, you only really 3 bras in your wardrobe.  "Every woman should have a 2 beige and a black.  You rotate these daily, wash every 3 wears, and they should last 12 - 18 months," said Amy.

1 Outfit 1 Day 2 Ways

http://lifeinfashionwithlindaisy.blogspot.com/2014/06/1-outfit-1-day-2-ways.html

Like many of you, my days are not always filled with glitz, glamor, and gallivanting around from one fantastic thing to the next.  Yesterday my hours were scheduled for a Target run, going to the bank, waiting at the DMV, and hanging out with some cool kids in the afternoon.  Shorts and and a tank top it was; there was not even an accessory to be found on me.  But after all of that running around, I did have a rendezvous scheduled with some of favorite ladies at Bar La Grasa.  Obviously I wanted to be a little more put together for the the crowd at BLG.  Digging through my closet in a rush and making a costume change wasn't going to happen.  I already had enough on my to do list, stressing about clothes was not going to be another one.  So I took my day look to a styled night outfit.

Key Add Ons:

Layering with a blazer.  This gives a structured look that the knit tanks does not have on it's own.  Also the blazer is in navy, much more approachable than black and keeps the look casual.

Style is in the details.  Rolling the sleeves of the blazer shows off the striped lining and gives is a cool casual summer night feel.  The tiny tuck is essential, this breaks up the all the fabric and shows a waist line.

Accessorizing right.  A long necklace draws the eye in and compliments the line of the blazer.  Also, gold jewelery elevates any look.  A chunky bracelet is easy and a quick grab.  Wedge shoes, not as dressy as a heel but gives you the same 'night out' style!

How To Wear A Denim Jacket

http://lifeinfashionwithlindaisy.blogspot.com/2014/05/how-to-wear-denim-jacket.html

This post has been sitting in my draft folder for some time now.  With the rain, clouds, and cold today I figure it's fitting.  The new spring skirts, dresses, and tops we've been stocking up on can't be put on hold.  Especially after the beautiful weekend we just had, wasn't losing the layers life changing!  The denim jacket has a knack for helping to  keep all those great seasonal pieces in rotation.  My favorite way to style it is to balance out, or neutralize an outfit that might have a lot of print or color to it.  I also turn to the denim jacket when I have a client in a loose dress or drapey knit and we need to add a little structure to the look, (and a blazer would be do dressy.)

With A Dress

With A Skirt

With Pants

Styling Notes

- Denim jackets are so versatile, they look great paired with dressy pieces or more casual outfits.
- Always cuff or roll the sleeve, this will give such a structured garment a softer and more feminine look and feel.
- Under layers can be left out or tucked in, if your top hangs longer than the jacket that's okay!
- The non-traditional denim wash is a great buy too, colored or white denim jackets give great style also.
- If you are looking for the traditional wash stay in the medium to dark wash.  A light wash, or one that is distressed, should only be added into your wardrobe in addition to a traditional denim jacket.

Mom's Make-Over...With Grace

Last night I had a great conversation with Jordana Green on WCCO Radio AM.  (If you're just jumping into this crazy space, I am the monthly resident fashion/style contributor on The Jordana Green Show.)  We talked about that awkward place where your mom needs a style pick me up, but you don't want to be the one to tell her!  How do you give a woman in your life the a gift that might send to wrong message?

1. Empowerment

Style is all about empowerment.  Do we as women feel as we are being our best selves, or are we settling for less than what we are worth?  Or worse, are we exhausting ourselves trying be and look like someone else?  The mission of Fashion Fix is to help women correct that wrong, and to give them the tools to feel empowered to be who they are in their best way.  Sometime all it takes is tuck here, a necklace here, great shoe there, etc...

Craft the message of your gift in way that says..."Mom I want to be empowered to be your best self this year!"

2. Confidence

Style can be used to give confidence.  Fashion Fix works a lot with women going through life change.  Women that are becoming empty nesters, making a career change, going through divorce, experiencing a mile stone birthday, and more.  Change can be positive or negative.  What ever it is, our style can help give us the confidence to achieve our goals.

Craft the message of your gift in a way that says... "Mom, I want you have time to be taken care of, instead of you taking care of everyone else!"

3. Smart

Style can be used to look and feel smart.  Think about it, we use that word in so many ways.  You've heard your self say before, "What a smart looking outfit."  Or, "She looks smart in that."  You may not be saying that someone actually looks like the have a high intelligence level, or they look like as if they went to Harvard. (Well, sometimes outfits do look like that, especially if they are wearing glasses.)  Fashion Fix works with women in their closet to find looks that help them covey the right message about who they are.  We are adult women.  Who are grown up and know how to dress our selves intentionally, our look should show that.  Fashion Fix's mission is to show women how respect them selves enough to wear something other than yoga pants everyday!

Craft the message of your gift in a way that says... Wait!  You might not need to send this message.  If you mom, sister, or girlfriend feels empowered, confident and smart in their style...  Well then leave them be!

How To Wear A Statement Necklace

Last night Fashion Fix participated in a busy, big, and fun pop-up shop.  It was the second time Fashion Fix was a vendor at the Wild Ruffle Pop-Up, and I am excited to have the biz there again in the fall!  There were crafters, creators, designers and more.  One of the most popular tables where those filled with beautiful hand crafted jewelry.  Lot's of necklaces, rings, earring, pins, and other adornments.  It got me thinking about all of the clients I work with who love to pick up these pieces, bring them home, and then never wear them!  It's heartbreaking!  Accessories are the flavor to any great outfit and can significantly change up a look depending on how you wear them.

A hot piece right now is the statement necklace.  So get out the duster and clean off those buys, because here is is how you are going to wear them!

With Tops & Blouses

Jackets & Cardigans

Do you have a stash of jewelry, pile of scarfs, or other accessories you aren't wearing?  Do you want to learn how to wear and style your accessories, or the rest of your wardrobe?  Let's get together then!

Visit the Fashion Fix website and read client testimonials, see make-over pictures, and learn about styling services.
