Style For A Cause

See this look on my face...  it was there all night long!

I couldn't hold in my joy one bit on Tuesday night as I gathered with friends and family to celebrate a local business and support a local charity.  Kokoon design house in Minneapolis, hosted a charity style and shopping event where donations were gathered for Ascension Place, helping women in need who are struggling through transition.  

Guest were encouraged to bring donations from their closets, and in return received up to $50 off any purchases made that night at Kokoon.  Volunteers accepted and sorted all donations as they came in, getting the goods ready for the stylists challenge that would happen later that evening!

Through out the night there was a runway show, highlighting the Spring and Summer Kokoon collection.  Huge applause my gal Karin Pecchia who was one of the selected models!  Hello, what a stunner!  (You might recognize Karin from also being one of my featured clients in this article {here}.)

While the runway was in full swing so was the shopping!  Racks, and racks, and racks of the most amazing pieces from Kokoon.  I couldn't get enough!

And to throw a little pizzazz into the night, as if there wasn't enough already!  We had a style challenge that I participated in along with Jessica Bergsten from 1200 Miles to Barneys,  Sasha Westin from Fabuliss, Jane Simpson from Kokoon, and Jennifer Allen from Stella & Dot.  We took the donated clothes and created new looks, showing guest how to make old new again.  Here's sweet little video of Karin and I showing off her look I created.

If you missed out, don't fret!  I am predicting another event in our futures...  Through out the night the message was clear.  We are in this together.  Guest were thrilled to learn more about Ascension Place and how they can continue to support their cause.  On top of that over 500 units of clothing and accessories were collected to help the women of Ascension Place!  My client Anna had this say about the evening:  

"... it was so great to see small businesses banding together for the greater good and I loved being able to be a part of that."

Mom's Make-Over...With Grace

Last night I had a great conversation with Jordana Green on WCCO Radio AM.  (If you're just jumping into this crazy space, I am the monthly resident fashion/style contributor on The Jordana Green Show.)  We talked about that awkward place where your mom needs a style pick me up, but you don't want to be the one to tell her!  How do you give a woman in your life the a gift that might send to wrong message?

1. Empowerment

Style is all about empowerment.  Do we as women feel as we are being our best selves, or are we settling for less than what we are worth?  Or worse, are we exhausting ourselves trying be and look like someone else?  The mission of Fashion Fix is to help women correct that wrong, and to give them the tools to feel empowered to be who they are in their best way.  Sometime all it takes is tuck here, a necklace here, great shoe there, etc...

Craft the message of your gift in way that says..."Mom I want to be empowered to be your best self this year!"

2. Confidence

Style can be used to give confidence.  Fashion Fix works a lot with women going through life change.  Women that are becoming empty nesters, making a career change, going through divorce, experiencing a mile stone birthday, and more.  Change can be positive or negative.  What ever it is, our style can help give us the confidence to achieve our goals.

Craft the message of your gift in a way that says... "Mom, I want you have time to be taken care of, instead of you taking care of everyone else!"

3. Smart

Style can be used to look and feel smart.  Think about it, we use that word in so many ways.  You've heard your self say before, "What a smart looking outfit."  Or, "She looks smart in that."  You may not be saying that someone actually looks like the have a high intelligence level, or they look like as if they went to Harvard. (Well, sometimes outfits do look like that, especially if they are wearing glasses.)  Fashion Fix works with women in their closet to find looks that help them covey the right message about who they are.  We are adult women.  Who are grown up and know how to dress our selves intentionally, our look should show that.  Fashion Fix's mission is to show women how respect them selves enough to wear something other than yoga pants everyday!

Craft the message of your gift in a way that says... Wait!  You might not need to send this message.  If you mom, sister, or girlfriend feels empowered, confident and smart in their style...  Well then leave them be!

Kokoon for You!

If you recall a while back I spoke of an amazing confidence building experience I had with Kokoon, a local design house here in Minneapolis.  If you don't recall, that's okay.  I'll give you time to catch up, you can read that article {here}.  Since then a friendship has blossomed between Fashion Fix and Kokoon.  A friendship that has been uplifting, inspiring, and more!  Obviously I can't keep them to my self and I have no problem sharing things I love.  

A couple of weeks ago Kokoon allowed me and my client Julie to have a private fit session at their studios in south Minneapolis.  It was a blast!  I preselected pieces based on Julie's style and needs.  They were all organized and ready when we arrived, along with fresh coffee and treats :)  We went to town playing dress up, in a real life design studio!

Land of 10,000, City of 20

St. Paul and Minneapolis are divided by the mighty Mississippi, and are The Twin Cities.  One lies east and the other west.  Each has its own heritage and history, and each celebrates those in their unique way.  St. Paul has the Winter Carnival {here} while Minneapolis puts on the Aquatennial Festival of the Lakes {here}!  Both events are a huge deal and bring the community together.  For many years as a resident of Minneapolis I have been on the side lines enjoying all the events and activities Aquatennial brings.  Here are just a few...

This year I got invited to come off the side lines and be guest at one of the most special events.  There are 47 beautiful young ladies from across the great state of Minnesota who gather here during the week of Aquatennial, all hoping to be crowned The Queen of the Lakes.  This queen becomes an ambassador for the city of Minneapolis across the country, participating in events such as... The Tournament of Roses Parade!  You can learn more about this organization {here}. 

Past queens make it a priority during the week of Aquatennial to pour into these young women and create events and opportunities for them to get to know one another and meet women leaders in Minneapolis.  Last night there was such an event; a candidates meet and great with women business leaders of Minneapolis.  I was lucky enough to be chosen to attend and share my journey from being an eager college student, confused grad, hard working 20 something, and now 30 something business owner.  It was a such an honor to be with these girls who are leaders in their communities and on their own journeys, which I'm sure will lead to success and greatness in their lives.
